If your alternator is on the passenger side of the motor, the ledge on the block deck is right below it. You may have to move the alternator to be able to read this engine assembly code. Some blocks have the engine assembly code on a flat portion of the block above the timing cover mating surface on the front of the block. Some very early smallblocks from the mid model years had an Engine Assembly Date which only included the last two digits of the year.

It was more like of a Target motor that the parts dept sold. We had a few on the dock that we sold. But now its just AC and Goodwrench now. So is the one-piece main seal block I used for my pickup's motor. I had my choice of 4 bare blocks, but the Mexican block had the least amount of core shift and the tightest fitting main caps.

In fact, several years ago I discussed this very subject with Gary from GMPP and he told me that the Mexican plants have the latest, newest equipment and the tolerances at these plants are actually tighter than in plants where they are using older equipment to build engines.
